HERITAGE SOCIETY CONCERN AT PPS14 EMERGING FINDINGS

The Ulster Architectural Heritage Society is deeply concerned that the emerging findings of the Executive Sub-Committee looking at the future of draft Planning Policy Statement 14 might signal a watering down of this crucial policy.

The urgent need for a more robust approach to rural planning in Northern Ireland is widely recognised. However, it is important that a new planning framework for the countryside strengthens protection of the built heritage, and non-listed vernacular buildings in particular.

A spokesperson for the Society continued:

"PPS14 is the most important planning policy to emerge in recent years as it offers both protection for the rural landscape and a potential lifeline for our diminishing number of traditional buildings.

A cross-cutting policy of such significance must be informed by a rigorous evidence based approach, which to date conclusively supports the need for a strong presumption in favour of the retention of vernacular buildings.

We look forward to playing an active part in the proposed public consultation process and to championing the cause of older buildings."
