'AT RISK' HISTORIC BUILDINGS HIGHLIGHTED IN NEW CATALOGUE

The Environment Minister, Sammy Wilson MP MLA, today launched the Built Heritage at Risk Northern Ireland Catalogue, Volume 8, at Crumlin Road Gaol in north Belfast.

The catalogue has been published by the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society, in partnership with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, and identifies 90 historically important buildings and sites throughout Northern Ireland which appear to be threatened, the majority due to disuse or disrepair.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister said:

"This building, Crumlin Road Gaol, has been on the online BHARNI Register since its launch in 2004. Now, thanks to recent investment by the Department for Social Development to restore the street frontage, it has gained popular public appeal.  Last year it was opened to the public as part of European Heritage Open Days organised by NIEA."

"This building is evidence that our built heritage can help support the wider economic and social regeneration of architecturally important areas such as this."

Ian McQuiston, Chairman of the BHARNI Sub-Committee of the UAHS, continued:

"We are delighted that the partnership between the NIEA and the UAHS continues to bear fruit with the launch of this important publication".

"The many buildings and structures identified in the catalogue represent tremendous opportunities not only to restore and pass on our heritage to future generations but also to create economic development and much needed employment for the construction industry".
