SOCIETY MOUNTS LEGAL CHALLENGE

DoE Planning Service granted approval to demolish the four storey red brick warehouse on Queen Street, Belfast at the end of June 2009. The building currently houses the Athletic Stores. Permission was also granted for a nine storey retail and residential scheme in its wake. The Society has lodged an application with the High Court to judicially review the decisions.

Built in 1890 by the celebrated architects, Young and Mackenzie, for local firm 'Swanston and Bones', linen collar and cuff makers, the substantial Victorian building commands a strong presence on a prominent corner site within the Belfast City Centre Conservation Area.
