CULTURE NIGHT PLACES LIGHT ON ARCADE

CULTURE NIGHT, FRIDAY 25th SEPTEMBER

The Cathedral Quarter came alive on Culture Night as more than fifty venues, from galleries to offices, artists studios to historic buildings threw open their doors for more than eighty free events. With music, street performers, projections, tours, talks and walks on offer, this was a magical evening of free cultural entertainment. See www.culturenightbelfast.com

We held a very initimate discussion @ 8.30pm in Cafe Clements, Rosemary Street about the future of the B1 listed North Street Arcade which suffered serious fire damage in an arson attack in April 2004. The Society continues to press for the accurate reinstatement of this unique curved modern structure which could serve as a focus for speciality retail and studio space within this designated conservation area and cultural quarter.

The John Hewitt kindly helped sponsor postcards, designed by Keith Connolly of Tonic Design, asking 'what future post arcade fire?'. We will bring these ideas to the developer of Royal Exchange (Ewarts), DSD, NIEA and the Cathedral Quarter Steering Group.

'Project Belfast' (a son et lumiere DVD originally devised by UAHS for the Queen's Festival in 2006) was shown in the Art College and we worked with NIEA to have images from the Monuments and Buildings Record projected onto the side of their building on Hill Street.
