CALLING ALL BUILDERS FOR GOLA ISLAND SKILLS SCHOOL
We are delighted to be running a short Traditional Building Skills Summer School on 11-13 June on the magical island of Gola, located off the north west coast of Donegal. The short weekend course is targeted towards builders and offers a taster of the palette of materials and skills used in repairing traditional buildings. Our training platform is Teach Charlie Ned, a typical example of a local vernacular building, leased to the Gola Development Committee. Work will involve re-slating the roof, reinstating cast iron guttering, replacing cement render with lime, and repairing and renewing timber sash windows and doors.
If you are interested in taking part, please download this Expression of Interest Form and return it to our offices. Due to the restricted size of the site, places are limited to 15 participants.
This exciting project is being funded by the DoEHLG through its Environment Fund, the Heritage Council and Donegal County Council.
We are extremely grateful to those who have donated materials or given expertise and time in kind. These include: conservation accredited surveyor, Chris McCollum; builder, Sean Brogan; vernacular buildings expert, Fidelma Mullane; Ed Byrne of the Traditional Lime Co. Ltd; Hugh Dorrian of Stoneware Studios; Borderloo, and the Arranmore Ferry.
