Rediscovering Dunville Fountain
The UAHS, in partnership with Belfast City Council (BCC) and Libraries NI, celebrated Dunville Park with an emphasis on the ornate listed Dunville fountain, featured on the Built Heritage at Risk register. The terracotta fountain is decorated with a mixture of Jacobean and Naturalistic ornament and bears a striking resemblence to the Doulton Fountain in Glasgow by the same designer, AM Pearce.
A clay workshop, inspired by the fountain's details, was held for local children, run by ceramic artist Eleanor Wheeler. In the evening, the BCC publication 'Celebrating Dunville Park' by Dr Ben Simon was launched.
The day ended with an illustrated talk by Jim Fleming of Glasgow City Council, entitled 'Putting Back the Pieces' on the restoration of the Doulton Fountain. All the activities were part of Discovering Places, a Cultural Olympiad campaign leading up to the 2012 games.
Officers and councillors from Belfast City Council and Glasgow City Council have agreed to meet to progress more detailed discussions about how best to secure the future of this magnificent fountain which is clearly much loved by local people of all ages.
