MINISTER REQUESTS URGENT DE-LISTING
Edwin Poots called a meeting of the Historic Buildings Council on his last day in office as DoE Minister to ask them to consider the urgent de-listing of Ballyloran House, near Larne.
The 1868 farmhouse and outbuildings, which feature on the Built Heritage at Risk register, were in excellent order until a few years ago, when the property was sold, vandalised and fire damaged.
We have questioned this highly unusual and inappropriate level of interference from the Minister and are pleased that the HBC voted unanimously to oppose the removal of one of Larne's few protected historic buildings from the schedule. It is hoped that NIEA will encourage its restoration, based on the comprehensive record it holds of the building prior to it being damaged, highlighting the grant aid still available for buildings at risk.
