Meanwhile Uses

The latest UAHS research on ‘Meanwhile Uses’ is available here to download in PDF format.

The research addresses the problem of heritage crime by encouraging interim and ‘meanwhile’ occupation of vacant historic buildings. It also encourages owners and end users to think in the short and medium term until a sustainable long term use can be found for vacant Listed Buildings. The report gives an overview of all the issues that need to be considered to implement a ‘meanwhile’ or ‘pop–up’ use, and also goes as far as to encourage ‘guardian’ tenants.

‘Meanwhile Uses’ are ‘popping up’ all over the UK with some local examples here in Northern Ireland. In the current economic climate we very much hope that this concept will be harnessed to its full potential helping regenerate communities, vacant historic buildings and areas on a ‘meanwhile’ basis, but becoming ‘meaningful’ and sustainable in the long term…

Also of timely relevance is the latest English Heritage ‘Conservation Bulletin’ (Issue 7: Summer 2013) focusing specifically on ‘Heritage Crime’.
