A Visit to Gilford, County Down

    24 February 2018, 10:30am – 4:00pm

Join us on 24 February on a visit to the local Gilford area which has long been associated with the linen industry.  Each of the buildings on the tour has its own linen connection.

The visit starts with coffee at 10.30 am at Elmfield.  This Scottish Baronial house was designed by William Spence of Glasgow in 1864 for James Dickson, a partner in Dunbar, Dickson & Co. of Gilford.

From Elmfield we travel to Ballydougan Pottery where we will have a soup and sandwich lunch. Bloomvale House which is home to the pottery and restaurant complex is a quaint stone and thatched building, built in 1785 for a Huguenot linen merchant.

In the afternoon we make our way to Gilford Castle, a building which shares many characteristics in style with Elmfield and was built for James Dickson’s brother in 1865.

The event concludes at 4pm following afternoon tea.

    Ticket price £30 per person.

Attendees are advised to wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear.
